Lab Tests You Can Order On Your Own To Check For Or Monitor Cancer

Lab Test

The longer we live, the more likely it is that our body accumulates substances that may cause us harm. These harmful substances interact with the body is three ways:

1. They are detoxified by the body and removed through feces, urine or sweat.

2. They cause abnormal cell growth or the cells forming a cancer.

3. They become defensive and wall off a foreign invader until it becomes a tumor.

Benefits Of Ordering Your Own Lab Tests

Although tumors and cancers may start at any age, they are more frequent in those who are older than 40.

There are a few types of tumors and cancers that may be more common in people in their 30s such as testicular cancer in men or rarely cancer of the cervix in women, but these are somewhat rare in that age range.

Although cancer is not something we should focus on because what we focus on, we bring into our lives, it is good to know what types of tests may be done to see what is happening in our body.

This way you can fully participate in the setting up of your own health goals and treatment plans.

And by providing the doctor with some additional information, you can help him stay on top of your situation if you do already have cancer.

Medical Lab Tests Tell Us Different Things

There are now lab tests that you may order online for a number of different types of cancer.

Although every single type of cancer doesn’t have its own test – and would cost far too much to run anyway, the list below tells you the type of cancer that can be discovered.

All the tests are blood tests. Do note the difference in the purpose of the different tests:

• Some are preventative and can find problems before a cancer is found.

• Some are for detection.

• Some are for the purpose of monitoring a cancer.

Lab Tests For Cancer

Who Needs It?

What It Tests For

Alpha Fetoprotein
Cost: Less than $50

Tests for testicular cancer. Looks for a certain type of protein – the alpha fetoprotein and human chorionic gonadotropin which are never found in men unless there is cancer. The test may be used as a baseline to determine how successful treatment is as well.
Less than $150

Testosterone may protect men from prostate cancer. In one study, men with prostate cancer were twice as likely to have low levels of testosterone. Not a direct test for cancer, this test can certainly help determine treatment and restoration of hormone levels.
CEA Test
Less than $50

CEA levels may be found to be high in those who have had recent infections, Crohn’s disease or other inflammatory bowel disease, pancreas inflammation. It can be used as a tumor marker for cancer of the GI tract.
CA 125
Cost: Less than $100

CA stands for cancer antigen. CA 125 stands for a specific type of antigen that is found in normal ovaries. But when cancer of the breast, lung, liver, pancreas or colon is an issue, CA 125 shows up. This test can help monitor your progress in beating cancer.
CA 15-3
Cost: Less than $100

There are other proteins that may be found in the blood when cancer is occurring in the body. When a woman has breast cancer, CA 15-3 shows up in the blood. But it also shows up if she has liver disease, the auto-immune disorder called lupus and sarcoidosis. This test can help you monitor breast cancer.
CA 19.9
Cost: Less than $150

Specific of cancers of the GI tract, pancreas and female reproductive system cancers, this test detects an antigen that can be used to monitor progress in cancer treatment. If there are other conditions unrelated to cancer such as cirrhosis or inflammation of the pancreas, it will also show up positive.
Circulating Tumor Cells
Cost: Less than $1500

The big fear with breast cancer is whether or not the tumor cells became blood-borne and are metastasizing. This test finds those cells. It’s useful to monitor breast cancer status during treatment.
Beta HCG
Cost: Less than $50

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) should never be found in men. The hormone is only present in females who are pregnant. When found in males, HCG is an indicator of possible testicular cancer.
Cost: Less than $100

The PSA Test, which stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, looks for the antigen in the bloodstream that indicates how prostate cancer treatment is going.

The American Cancer Society states that a good diet is essential for the prevention of cancer. A selenium deficiency makes cancer grow wild. Supplementing with the trace element revs up the body’s immunity and detoxification systems again so that if you did have cancer your body can fight it better.
Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy
Cost: Less than $75

Without vitamin D in our body or at low levels, we essentially have no immunity. It’s only been recently that scientists have discovered the very important role that vitamin D plays in immunity. Vitamin D also can restore genes back to their original state, where health instead of disease is manifesting.
CoQ10 Test
Cost: Around $200

CoQ10 levels are low in those who have cancer, diabetes, heart problems, and Parkinson’s disease. CoQ10 is needed for all cells to produce energy and without it, your energy levels will be low, muscles will ache, and you won’t heal fast. It’s an indirect test for cancer, because you can’t conclude that a low CoQ10 means you have cancer. A low CoQ10 may make cancer grow faster though.

Don’t fear cancer! Do your best to follow your intuition and do consider the lab tests for cancer as a way of staying ahead of the game.
